Limit The Use and Accessibility of Melatonin in New Zealand
The issue
Melatonin has been quite popular recently with changes for it being available over the counter and online without needing a prescription, making it an easy solution with insomnia and other sleep disorders. This unrestricted access has some risks that should be pointed out.
I personally haven't had any encounters with a huge reliance of melatonin, but I have looked into it and see some risks that must be noted. I saw that a psychological crutch/barrier could be created if relying on melatonin for a long time, as well as melatonin reacting with other medicines. Another reason why I created this, was the lack of research and scientific investigations on this topic. There were barely any scientific investigations with only a couple doing small research of the effects it had on children and most of the other studies was social and didn't have any scientific proof.
Overall, until more study is shown if melatonin has any other negative effects on the body, I reckon New Zealand should turn it back so that you need a prescription for melatonin until further evidence is shown. \
Regards.
