First, an important clarification: we are not asking for donations. Change.org may automatically invite people to contribute money to promote petitions on its platform. We are grateful to those who have chosen to do so, but the organizers of this petition are not requesting or collecting funds. The most valuable support you can give is to sign, share, and help spread the word.

We are now approaching 300 signatures, and our next goal is 500. Please share the petition in local Facebook groups, on Nextdoor, and directly with neighbors, friends, and families at your school.

Please also talk with SLCUSD teachers and staff who feel strongly about this issue and may wish to sign or support the effort.

We would also like to take this opportunity to share a recent Psychology Today article that cites research supporting our petition’s call to bring back more pen-and-paper assignments in schools: Why Handwriting Is Better for Your Brain Than Typing.

Key points:

  • Handwriting engages motor, language, and attention systems, activating the brain more fully than typing.
  • Writing by hand improves memory by promoting deeper processing and stronger encoding.
  • Simple habits like note-taking or journaling by hand can support attention, learning, and cognitive health.

Thank you for helping us move toward 500 signatures. Questions, introductions, or offers to volunteer can be sent to purposefullearningslo@gmail.com.
