The issue

My heart aches each time I read another story of lives lost unnecessarily. Over a million people globally die annually from direct complications related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) — a number that could be drastically reduced with proactive measures. In our beautiful country of New Zealand, I believe we have a unique opportunity to lead by example.

The excessive use of antibiotics in medical interventions has contributed significantly to the insidious rise of AMR. This global health threat not only jeopardizes our ability to treat common infections but also undermines critical medical procedures that rely on effective antibiotics, such as surgeries and cancer therapies. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), AMR is one of the top ten global public health threats facing humanity, demanding urgent action.

One stark example of this crisis is the increasing difficulty in treating urinary tract infections and respiratory infections, which are becoming more common and harder to treat due to resistant bacteria. In New Zealand, reports indicate that antibiotic-resistant infections are on the rise, causing prolonged illnesses, more hospital stays, and unfortunately, more deaths.

To address this growing concern, we must limit the use of antibiotics strictly for necessary medical interventions and implement stringent oversight in prescribing practices. Healthcare providers should prioritize diagnosing infections accurately before initiating antibiotic treatment. This means investing in advanced diagnostic tools and training for medical practitioners to enhance their capacity to distinguish between bacterial and viral infections.

Furthermore, public awareness campaigns should be launched to educate our communities about the risks of antibiotic misuse and the reality of AMR. This education is critical to change the behavior of patients who often pressure doctors for antibiotics, as well as to inform them about the importance of adhering to prescribed antibiotic courses only when necessary.

By signing this petition, you are joining the fight against AMR in New Zealand. Together, we can press our policymakers and healthcare authorities to adopt stricter guidelines on antibiotic usage. Your signature could save lives, preserve the efficacy of existing antibiotics, and protect future generations from the devastating effects of drug-resistant infections. Please add your voice today.
