Petition updateLights - Cameras - Action: Increase Security in Oak Lawn to Reduce CrimeDo not let down your guard. Complacency creates voids for crime to fill.

An arrest was made in which two criminals were caught performing a violent carjacking not far from the Oak Lawn district. This looks to be pretty promising as far as being the same people who committed at least some of the attacks in Oak Lawn in the past months. Of course there is a lot of investigation and time that will have to be put into the case and DPD should be working diligently in the coming weeks to do the police work required. This petition called for a Lights, Cameras, Action approach to combatting increased crime in Oak Lawn. The assumption I had when I made the petition was that this was probably not the same person or persons committing the crimes but that a void had been created in Oak Lawn which invited crime to occur due to complacency and false sense of security. Whether these two individuals indeed did attack all 12 or more reported (and unreported) attacks or not does not negate the fact that Oak Lawn needs a new mindset going forward when it comes to long term security and the battle against complacency. If we are complacent about crime - that is - if we take this arrest as the end of the need to increase our lights, cameras, and patrols - we are creating a vulnerability in our community that will invite other criminals to set in. The truth is that this type of event we have seen is a common cyclical occurrence: • Low crime invites a false sense of security so patrols and security measures are • eased off. • Criminals come in and create a mess. • Citizens revolt and call for increased security. • Increased security measures lowers crime. • Low crime invites a false sense of security so patrols and security measures are eased off. We are getting more lights, we are getting our cameras, and we have had a lot of action taken since this petition was released. Let's stay focused. We can keep this momentum up and create a nice, secure environment for our community so that complacency never sets in again and bloodied faces are an absurd part of our past that never has to be relived.
