Install water fountains around Lewes to reduce plastic use and save money
This petition had 1,463 supporters
We petition Lewes District Council and Lewes Town Council to install water fountains (taps) in Lewes and perhaps also in surrounding centres (Ringmer, Seaford and Newhaven).
The UK uses 16 million plastic bottles a day, of which half go to landfill and many end up in our rivers and seas. The process of making plastic bottles is energy intensive, and the plastic when thrown away is polluting. Water fountains will save money for local residents and visitors, as well as reducing plastic use, pollution, litter and the costs of rubbish disposal.
We also petition you to run a competition for the design of the water fountains, possibly in partnership with a local organisation such as Making Lewes (who have expressed interest in being involved). An eye-catching and innovative design would be likely to increase the use of the fountains, as well as increasing Lewes’s design reputation and charm for tourists.
The cost-benefit analysis should take account all of these benefits to residents, local businesses and the environment, as well as the construction and running costs of each fountain.
Please sign and share! If we can get 1500 signatures we can get the District Council to debate this issue.
