Letter to the Leadership of the Association for Asian Studies

The Issue

We, the undersigned, protest the Association for Asian Studies’s co-sponsorship of the up-coming AAS-in-Asia conference in New Delhi, given the Indian government’s refusal to grant Pakistani nationals visas to attend. This runs counter to the Association’s stated principles of free scholarly exchange and academic work.

We ask the Association make it a core requirement that all international conferences, workshops, meetings and other projects it co-sponsors or endorses be restricted to those nations and territories which bar no foreign nationals and which extend full legal, civil and human rights to participants regardless of national origin, race or ethnicity, religion, gender, sexuality, political affiliations and able-bodiness.
