Letter of Solidarity Regarding the Treatment of our Nigerians brothers in Cabo Verde
Le problème
We, citizens of Cape Verde and concerned Africans across the continent, strongly condemn the degrading treatment inflicted upon Nigerian citizens in our country on April 13, 2025. This is not an isolated case—and it must stop. We call on ECOWAS and Cape Verdean authorities to take urgent, concrete action to end this injustice.
On April 13, 2025, Nigerian citizens were subjected to unjust and degrading treatment in Cape Verde. As Cape Verdean citizens—joined by our African brothers and sisters—we feel deeply ashamed and outraged by what occurred.
This is far from the first time. Sadly, such treatment is consistently directed at Africans, never at Europeans or Americans. These actions are not only discriminatory, but represent a complete betrayal of the African values of solidarity, dignity, and hospitality.
We refuse to let Cape Verde be defined by injustice. Our country is not just its institutions—it is its people, and we stand for unity, respect, and African brotherhood.
We demand the following:
-Immediate identification and sanctioning of the officers and authorities involved in this abuse.
-An official apology from the Cape Verdean government to the victims and their nation.
-Intervention from ECOWAS, with pressure placed on Cape Verde to respect the right to free movement under regional agreements.
-If necessary, we call for temporary travel bans on Cape Verdean officials to ECOWAS countries until measures are enforced.
-Implementation of concrete, permanent changes to prevent such acts from ever happening again.
We understand that these steps may create diplomatic tension. But it is better to face temporary discomfort for justice than to remain silent in the face of ongoing injustice.
We, Cape Verdean citizens and allies, say:
-No to discrimination
-No to humiliation
-No to injustice
We reaffirm our total solidarity with the Nigerian people and with all Africans who believe in a continent united by dignity and mutual respect.
✊🏾 Sign this petition to demand accountability, respect for ECOWAS agreements, and justice for our African brothers and sisters.
