Meet Edward:
He’s been subject to the educational system which hasn’t changed for hundreds of years for the past 5 years of his life…
Now he’s grown up at the ripe age of 10.
He’s been taught in batches with other students his age for as long as he can remember, school bells remind him of the factory workers they learned about in history from the 1800’s and unfortunately raising their hands when they want to speak and sitting in nice, neat rows in class didn’t help this image either.
Standardised testing encourages his teachers to teach a very narrow selection of skills that the school believes increases test performance rather than achieve an in depth understanding of the curriculum, which he is very capable of doing.
Inauthentic learning and memorising arbitrary information which he generally forgets a day after the exam has become his way of life and the way he’s measured for intelligence - but learning can be much deeper for him than this and he knows that.
Some people in his classroom know everything that the teacher is teaching and have already read through the textbook and done all the exercises, while he just didn’t understand the material from three lessons ago and still has a question - he didn’t want to look stupid and ask.
Because he was indoctrinated in this system of doing tests and then moving on to the next one before properly understanding the material, he went through his grade levels gradually gaining more and more holes in his foundation until eventually - he had so many holes in his foundation nothing in lessons made sense anymore. He got so dismayed he gave up and accepted he was a failure as the system rightfully saw him. He failed his exams and concluded he also must have failed in life.
There are too many students like Edward. We need to make a difference. What will you do to help students like Edward today?
