YOUR HELP TO PASS THE LUNG HEALTH RESOLUTION AT THE 78th WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY IS CRUCIAL
In 2021, communicable and noncommunicable lung diseases were among the leading causes of mortality, including COVID-19 causing over 18 million deaths globally (1). Despite their devastating consequences for patients and families, respiratory diseases have been largely absent from global health conversations, we can no longer ignore it.
The socio-economic burden of lung diseases, compounded by the growing impact of climate change, places them among the top 3 leading causes of global mortality(2).
A GLOBAL INTEGRATED LUNG HEALTH POLICY
GAAPP has joined many other organizations to call for the adoption of the Integrated Lung Health Resolution at the 2026 World Health Assembly which represents an overdue recognition of the immense burden that respiratory diseases place on individuals, communities, and health systems worldwide.
PROMOTING AND PRIORITIZING AN INTEGRATED LUNG HEALTH APPROACH
Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, China, Egypt, Ghana, Guatemala, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Palestine, Qatar, Romania, Thailand and Vanuatu are leading an initiative to place lung health firmly on the global public health agenda and have proposed a World Health Assembly Resolution on Promoting and prioritizing an integrated lung health approach.
WHAT WILL WHA LUNG HEALTH RESOLUTION ACHIEVE?
The Lung Health Resolution is focused on all respiratory communicable and non-communicable diseases including tuberculosis, pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, lung cancer and so many others. - Acknowledge indoor and outdoor air pollution as one of the leading risk factors for lung diseases, and commit to prevent, to promote lung health and reduce exacerbations of respiratory conditions.
- Support expansion of patient-centered research, surveillance and data collection to provide innovative diagnostic tools and new treatments.
