Changing names of institutional buildings is always hard when it does not mean much to those who are not affected by the original name.

But naming a building after someone who sent gay men and trans people to prison on the belief that they were dangerous and needed to be "cured" is not a modern practice, and leaving Minister Downing's name on the Downing Centre hurts those LGBTQ+ members of the various professional and support staff who use the Downing Centre each day.

There are also many members of the LGBTQ+ community who are users of the building through civil and criminal law.
