The Marine air terminal is the only remaining operational terminal  from the first era of transatlantic flying. It was upgraded later in the 1940s to handle standard-body aircraft at the time that used concrete runways. In 1980, it became a New York City Landmark and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places two years later. In 1986, Pan Am revived commercial service by operating a shuttle there.
