For those who haven’t heard the news, Pakistan has made recently made critical progress in the fight against child marriage. Recent updates to the law increased the legal age of marriage for girls to 18 in several provinces! This is a huge win for children’s rights.
While this is a step forward, the fight is far from over.
In many marginalized and rural areas, child marriage still occurs due to deep rooted cultural norms, poor enforcement of laws, and a lack of awareness. The law does protect girls better on paper, but it has to enforced first handed. Particularly in places where traditions can easily outweigh laws.
Many people in these areas are still unaware of the legal age or don’t understand the harm of child marriage, meaning we must continue to push for public awareness campaigns and proper enforcement of laws.
It’s amazing that the law has been changed, but now it’s time for the next step - to change mindsets. Please share this petition to more people to support this cause. Every signature strengthens the message that child marriage has to end, for the sake of Pakistan.
