The Issue

For people who don’t know us or anything about Matilda. I gave birth to Matilda 17 weeks early on the 14th January 2019  so she was born at 23 weeks weighting 1pound and 7ounces. Whilst in labour we were told there would be 10% chance she would survive the birth. After 3 hours Matilda arrived breathing for herself and a lovely colour pink!! Shocking midwives and peads docs. Matilda was very quickly moved to scbu in whiston hospital before being transferred to Liverpool women’s neo natal unit. After 3 hours I was transferred there to be with her. She was doing great which a lot of people at the women’s were shocked about.

Bearing in mind me and peter had no previous experience of Neo natal units its a completely different world. Incubators, jaundice lamps, breathing ventilators was all new to us.
The staff nurses, doctors and nurse practitioners all talk you through every step when doing Obs, temp even moving Tilly over so her head wasn’t lay on the one side for to long.

After Matilda gave a very hard fight she sadly left us on the 27th January 2019. Our whole worlds collapsed having our other 2 children Layla and Joseph be there every step of the way.

After working with a lot of families the realisation sets in that if I had gone 1 day earlier to hospital the law states that doctors nurse neo natal are not allowed to intervene. How can this be right when the legal abortion gestation is 24 weeks!! Believe me that 24 weeker is a child it’s not an egg it’s a fully fledged person. 10 fingers 10 toes eyes although they maybe fused. I’ve just read a story about a 21+ weeker who was breathing unaided for 44 minutes and no one could intervene it’s not 44 seconds.
