It is a harsh reality that while some countries are progressively changing their views on cannabis, in Saudi Arabia, we still face heavy restrictions. To me, and many others, this feels unjust. Consuming cannabis is a personal decision that should be available to all adults, not restricted due to geographical boundaries. The legal use of cannabis, for adults, could bring happiness to many across the globe.

Cannabis legalization has shown benefits in various sectors in countries where it has been introduced. For instance, in the United States, statistics indicate that legalization has led to increased tax revenue, job creation, and a significant decrease in crime rates (source: ACLU). Similarly, in Canada, where cannabis is legal for recreational and medicinal use for adults, reports have shown a decrease in opioid-related deaths (source: Journal of Health Economics).

Saudi Arabia’s strict laws and penalties associated with cannabis use act as severe deterrents. However, these laws fail to consider the positive effects that regulated cannabis use could bring. It is time for Saudi Arabia to progress towards a sensible, adult-based approach to cannabis.
