Release Bassel El Amine/
The Issue

We, the undersigned, and on the occasion of the International Day of Human Rights, demand the following from the competent authorities of the Lebanese state, led by the newly elected President of the Republic, regarding the unlawful detention of the journalism student Bassel Al Amine, for exercising his constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression:
1. The immediate release of and the revocation of the charges against Bassel Al Amine, whose personal Facebook post, however unpopular, did not rise to the level of hate speech or incitement to violence, and should be protected by law.
2. To review and amend the laws and relevant articles in laws, including the penal code, so that they harmonize with the Lebanese Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression and considers it a founding value of the state, and with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Lebanon is a party.
The Lebanon that represents us and brings us together can withstand our differences and diversity of opinions. The repeated and unjustified targeting of journalists, activists, and ordinary citizens for freedom of expression, along with a troubling lack of due process and imposition of disproportionate and inconsistent penalties, is creating a dangerous precedent that threatens to undermine Lebanon’s status as the freest of Arab countries.
Real patriotism is demonstrated by calling for the protection of constitutional and universal rights of citizens. We hope that the new administration expands these rights and freedoms.
