Thanks for helping us collect over 700 signatures! We’ve heard a lot of you ask, “What’s next for the petition?”
The League of American Bicyclists that Portland’s rankings will be up for review next in 2017. We’re planning to continue collecting signatures as long as it takes to adjust our Bicycle Friendly Community ranking to reflect the realities on our streets. As we do that, we’ll keep you informed of opportunities to help push for safer streets in Portland.
Speaking of getting involved…two things this week:
1) On June 23rd you can check out the Save the Humans ride, starting at 5:30pm at Oregon Park. Organizers say the ride is “to protest increasingly unsafe conditions on PDX streets, including those designated as bike routes & neighborhood greenways. … We will meet at Oregon Park to make signs/banners first.”
2) And if you want to help our voice get heard, come to the Safe Streets Rally at Portland City Hall this Wednesday, June 24th. Rally outside City Hall at 8am, stick around for testimony inside City Hall at 9:30am. Stay for a full day of action, or come back later to join BikeLoudPDX at NW Park & Couch for the Downgrade Portland Ride at 4:30pm.
Join other people who live & work in Portland to tell the City we need to fix our neighborhood greenways, actively combat reckless and aggressive behavior on our streets, and build streets where everyone feels safe walking and bicycling.
Here’s more from BikeLoudPDX about how you can help on June 24th:
“BikeLoudPDX is joining Climate Action Coalition and Portland Cacophony Society in inviting everyone to rally at Portland City Hall on June 24th from 8am - 7pm to tell the Mayor and Commissioners that we’ve had enough talk; now is the time for action.
The City of Portland has created many ambitious, forward-thinking plans determining the future direction of the city. We have an already-approved bicycle plan, pedestrian plan, climate action plan, and a ‘plan to end homelessness,’ and even a nascent Vision Zero plan. However these plans are not being followed by the city government that created them, and as a result we are falling behind on our climate, transit, and equity goals. We demand that the city stop making excuses and take concrete action to Follow the Plan!”
