Address Racist Behaviours at Sydenham High School and LDSB

There have been many reported incidents of racism at schools within the Limestone District School Board, and in particular Sydenham Highschool. These instances include both racially charged name calling, threats of physical violence, and public embarrassment made towards students of colour by other students. These actions have caused and continue to cause tremendous pain to targets of racial discrimination and ultimately led to a failure for the schools to provide a safe environment for visible minority students.

The most concerning part of this is the inaction, and sometimes indifference of teachers and administrators paid to protect and educate students. Even with multiple reports to administration and the school board little has been done to make the schools a safer environment for visible minorities. It is about time the school board starts making concrete and comprehensive efforts to train themselves and their employees to be anti-racist. It also means educating students on the large racial inequities that exist within Canadian society by updating current curriculum. We demand to have our voices heard. We will not stand down in silence anymore.

If you have anything to share about your directly experiencing or viewing racism at any schools in the LDSB please share your stories below.
