Pass Adrian's Law

The Issue

Adrian Alexander Jones is widely known as the sweet, beautiful 7 year old boy whose parents fed him to pigs. He used his little voice repeatedly, for years, to tell adults he was being mentally abused, beaten, tortured and starved even though each time he told, it would get worse. Each plea for help was ignored by doctors, social workers, police officers, juvenile officers and therapists in the states of Kansas and Missouri.  Adrian essentially starved to death alone, beaten, cold,  emaciated and naked, taped to a lawn chair inside a shower where he was being secretly held for months, in the basement of their family home. When his Father and Step-Mother could no longer stand the smell of his little emaciated body, they fed him to pigs.

During the height of his abuse Adrian's great Uncle, Willie Flowers, lived in the home and not only witnessed all of Adrian's terrible abuse, he actually assisted in keeping Adrian locked away and starved.  No charges have been filed against him because in Kansas, no one is required to report child abuse.  Adrian's law would change that and make every adult living in the home with a child being a bused, who isn't a victim of abuse themselves, a mandated reporter. This would have saved Adrian's life.

The Kansas DCS has greatly failed so many innocent children like Adrian Jones and Gabriel Fernandez.  This entire system needs to be revised.  Adrian's case file from Kansas DCS is 2,000 pages long yet nothing was ever done to help him. 1,770 children are murdered every single year from abuse an/or neglect at the hands of their parent(s) or guardian. We cannot keep standing idly by as children keep being senselessly murdered! The state of Kansas needs to stop stalling and pass Adrian's Law, these children need help and those who harm them need to be held accountable!

Adrian’s Law would put in place a special court appointed advocate for every child in the Kansas DCS system. The advocate would spend time with the child, oversee the case through its entire duration and speak in the sole interest of that child in court. The advocate would assist social workers and make sure all of the child’s needs are being met which would prevent any child from slipping through the cracks like little Adrian did. This would save the lives of countless children in the system and give them a voice in court instead of relying solely on their overloaded caseworker.
