The California statewide fur ban bill AB44 was signed into law yesterday. Thanks so much to all the people who have worked so hard and diligently on getting this accomplished and making sure that rabbits are not excluded from the bill. We all did it by raising awareness, signing petitions, calling our representatives, collecting signatures, writing letters, and showing up with a bunny at Assemblymember’s Marc Levine’s office when he requested an amendment to exclude rabbits. Please take a minute to post on social media and thank Governor Gavin Newsom for signing the bill and Assemblywoman Laura Friedman for her leadership in introducing the bill. And if you are not in California, tag your representatives and urge them to ban fur. Time for other states to follow California’s humane lead when it comes to animal welfare! On a personal note, I want to say a special thank you to Deborah Claassen and Marcy Berman. Deborah is a dedicated animal activist who attended the Assembly Committee hearing where the rabbit exemption was introduced and posted about it on social media. Without her, I probably wouldn’t have known. Marcy is the executive director of SaveABunny who quickly sprang into action when other animal rights and rescue groups were willing to throw rabbits under the bus for a partial victory or simply did nothing! To us it was clear that there wasn’t going to be a victory and a fur free California without bunnies.
