Me llamo Dina, tengo 50 años y soy de Bogotá, Colombia.

Fui una mujer activa, llena de energía, apasionada por el sóftbol, el baloncesto, el voleibol y el baile. 

Pero un día, sin aviso, el aire me faltó, mi pecho dolió y mi corazón palpitó con angustia. El diagnóstico fue hipertensión pulmonar idiopática. En ese momento tenía 30 años y me dijeron que me quedaban tres años de vida. Tenía tres hijos pequeños, una familia que me necesitaba y ninguna certeza de futuro.

Pasé por momentos muy duros con este diagnóstico. Pero llegó la esperanza: el primer tratamiento innovador en Colombia y el acceso a atención médica especializada que me permitiría sobrevivir.

Han pasado 20 años desde ese diagnóstico, y hoy, mi corazón está bajo monitoreo constante. A través de una bomba de infusión subcutánea recibo la medicación que me mantiene con vida.

Soy una sobreviviente y no ha sido fácil, pero he visto crecer a mis hijos, he viajado y, junto con otros cinco pacientes con hipertensión pulmonar, cofundé Ayúdanos a Respirar, una red de pacientes que apoya a quienes recorren este mismo camino.

Vivir con hipertensión pulmonar es difícil, pero no imposible. Cuando el corazón quiere vivir, ningún pronóstico puede detenerlo. Pero es esencial que todas las personas tengan el mismo acceso a tratamientos especializados que yo tuve, para que puedan vivir la vida al máximo.

My name is Dina, I am 50 years old and I come from Bogotá, Colombia. 

I used to be an active woman, full of energy and passionate about softball, basketball, volleyball, and dancing. 

But one day, without warning, I wasn’t able to breathe, my chest ached, and my heart pounded with distress. The diagnosis was idiopathic pulmonary hypertension. In that moment, the doctors told me I had only three years to live. I was 30 years old, with three young children, a family that needed me, and no certainty about the future. 

I went through huge moments of struggle with this diagnosis. But then came hope: the first innovative treatment available in Colombia and access to the specialised medical care that I needed to survive.

It has been 20 years since that diagnosis and today, my heart is under constant monitoring. Through a subcutaneous infusion pump, I receive the medication that keeps me alive. 

I am a survivor and it hasn’t been easy, But I’ve watched my children grow, I have travelled, and, together with five other pulmonary hypertension patients, I co-founded Ayúdanos a Respirar (Help Us Breathe), a patient network that supports others walking this same path. 

  Life with pulmonary hypertension is difficult, but not impossible. When the heart wants to live, no prognosis can stop it. But it is essential that everyone has the same access to specialised treatment like I did , so that they can live life to the fullest.
