Latest update on the swifts: After attending and speaking at last night's D158 School Board Mtg, the board voted and unanimously approved the following action plan: JMA Architects will construct a temporary chimney that will be installed as quickly as possible in proximity to the existing chimney. This will allow the swifts time to hopefully acclimate to the new structure. The chimneys will be reinspected in about 3 weeks. Once surveys confirm there are no more babies inside, the chimneys will be capped and demolished. The Board will be considering a permanent structure later to enable the swifts continued use of Coolidge as their home. The Board will be working with State DNR Biologists to ensure the birds' well-being and needs are being met. While this might not be our ideal solution, it is a decent compromise all around. One we should feel good about. We should all be proud of the momentum our efforts have generated in keeping the swifts safe. Huge thank yous to everyone who has played a role! Hope to still see everyone out there...the swifts will call Lansing home until mid-October, after which they will return to Peru. They'll come back to join us next April when they return in the spring! Just gotta make sure they have a permanent tower to come back to. Please Follow our FB Page link below for continued updates as we document the journey of the compromise! Thank you everyone for your support! There is power in the pen, and in community!
