Apologize for using the name "Manifest Destiny" for a cross-country billboard showcase and change the name of the project.
The Issue
This issue is vitally important. If we have any illusions about being critical, political, thinking people, we can't continue to support an art project, or an organization, that uses the name of a genocide to promote itself.
LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) continues to get positive press for their exhibition titled "Manifest Destiny," despite the fact that this term was used as part of a campaign to justify American imperialist expansion and the mass extermination of Native Americans. Neither the organizers, nor the artists involved, address the issue of white European supremacy inherent to the idea of Manifest Destiny, and a vast majority of invited artists who participated in the project are of white European descent.
According to exhibition organizer Zoe Crosher: "The project is more interested in the personal dimensions, about being on your own journey West and experiencing "all the possibility and disappointment of the arrival." http://www.laweekly.com/arts/a-2-400-mile-art-exhibit-is-about-to-hit-la-5415822
Manifest Destiny is not about your personal journey (moving to Los Angeles or whatever is meant by that generic statement) and we should be disturbed to see artists use this horrific, bloody history to promote themselves and their careers.
This exhibition has done nothing but detract from our understanding of the ideology of Manifest Destiny and its role in the genocide of Native Americans. Sign this petition to encourage LAND and Zoe Crosher to apologize for their mistake and change the title of the project before its final installment reaches California on March 30th.
