FOAL SEPARATED FROM MOTHER ~ Stop trapping Brumbies in foaling or lactating season

Marilyn NuskeMelbourne, Australia
Oct 24, 2026

Photo of a foal in a trapyard,  with lactating mare excluded from the trapyard. This is exactly why the National Standard Operating Procedures do not support trapping during either foaling season or lactating season.  NPWS are presently trapping in KNP despite considerable objection of Advocates.

Foals can be excluded from a trap when  a mare is trapped,  and die of starvation, or worse,  predated by a wild pig or fox. as they have no protection . Or as is the case in this photo, the foal was pushed into the trapyard with other Brumbies wanting to reach the hay and molasses. A very young foal can be crushed.  The mare can be seen, she was winnying and very distressed by her foal being separated from her, and the foal highly  alarmed.

This must stop. It is another cruelty meted out by the Labor Government, National Parks and Wildlife Services and approved of by Invasive Species Council, advisors to the Government.

We call for an end to lethal control of Brumbies, and an end to trapping Brumbies.

We have sought a Brumby Conservation Refuge for surviving Brumbies, estimated to be well below 3,000,  and all wildlife,  be established in the Northern and Southern ends of KNP away from SnowyHydro2 and devdlopment. We have not yet heard from the Minister or the Premier.

Brumbies are presently targeted as a Biodiversity offset, a style of carbon credit, aerially shot,   to compensate for high level environmental damage and deaths of thousands of threatened and endangered species caused by SnowyHydro2.  National Parks and Wildlife Services presently hold $72 million for offset projects. This action appeases the anti non native brigade, and those who believe Brumbies dont belong in KNP, notwithstanding Brumbies have lived in the Australian Alpine Park for 200 years.
