The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (hereafter MPVA) concluded a deal to purchase the Young Korean Academy building in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 31 (PST).
<The news of possible demolition of the Young Korean Academy building precipitated the SAVE YKA movement among local Korean American community leaders as well as from other preservation-minded community members who recognized the significance of the property. The movement included the leaders from the Young Korean Academy, the Dosan Ahn Chang-ho Memorial Foundation, and the Korean National Association Memorial Foundation. Local and national preservation advocacy groups Los Angeles Conservancy and Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAHiP) submitted an application to nominate the property as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in May 2021, temporarily halting demolition by the property owner.>
To be able to preserve the Young Korean Academy (Hung Sa Dahn) building, which was in danger of demolition due to redevelopment…It marks the first case for MPVA to purchase real estate overseas in order to preserve historic sites of Korea’s independence movement.
MPVA will conduct a detailed inspection of the interior and exterior of the structure and make its survey results public within this year.
