UPDATE...THEY KILLED MR. PICKLES
Kelly Cross -- a representative of Janice Hahn's office -- has been working with me to facilitate change with Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control. I just sent her this email after waiting ONE MONTH for their new Appointment System to take effect and save the animals.

Hi Kelly:
Since August 1st, I’ve been talking to staff and volunteers at many of the Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County pounds. I’ve been watching and video taping for hours on end of people NOT entering the County animal pounds. I’ve talked to staff and volunteers and they are afraid to tell the public what is actually happening right now out of fear of losing their jobs or volunteer positions. They report almost NO ONE IS SHOWING UP TO THE POUNDS. The staff at both LA CITY and LA COUNTY report that the appointment based system is an absolute FAILURE. They are telling me that they hate the new appointment system mainly because it’s taking away from the care of the animals and from their normal duties. They are telling me that this new APPOINTMENT system is a WASTE OF EVERYONE’S TIME AND MONEY. They are also complaining about a lack of staff and volunteers. They are claiming that this is causing huge internal stress on the animals, staff and volunteers. So, though you might claim that the animals are calmer and healthier because people are not walking through the kennels, the truth is that the staff and the volunteers are more stressed at this new APPOINTMENT system. They are spending all their time chasing appointments instead of working with the animals. This NEW stress is being transferred to the animals. STOP THIS INSANITY NOW.
Also, why is LA County Animal Care and Control not participating in Clear The Shelters program? Why haven’t the pounds OPENED THE SHELTERS for this annual event? It saves hundreds of lives. I’m realizing that this mismanagement is far worse than I previously realized and if LA County doesn’t open at least on weekends soon, I’m going to push even harder to get more attention to this mismanagement. I was told I should give this new system a month. It’s been a month and the system is an absolute failure.
We need to change the messaging NOW. We need to change the policies now. We need the shelters/pounds OPENED at least on weekends starting NOW. I gave it a month and the system failed. It’s not me saying that…IT’S YOUR OWN STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS!
