Save Hudson Elementary School in Pasco County Florida

The Issue

My two daughters attended Hudson Elementary School and my grandsons now attend Hudson Elementary School. The school is filled with caring, competent teachers, staff and volunteers. The school board has decided that they would like to close our school and transfer our students to two other schools in the district. This is not a well thought out plan.

Trauma education has been accepted and promoted within our county in the last year and teachers need to be aware that scholars have needs beyond those in the classroom. This is not a new concept for teachers- good teachers have always known that kids basic needs should be addressed before academics. Consistency is key.

The scholars at Hudson Elementary deserve that consistency. The school board should be fighting for that consistency  before putting these scholars into another tailspin of uncertainty. For many of these scholars, school their daily routine at HES is their most clear form of consistency, a good morning fist bump from their teacher, a hot lunch in the cafeteria or a celebratory hug from an administrator these are the things that scholars need BEFORE they can be successful in the classroom.

Research proves that community involvement is pivotal in school achievement. Schools that encourage familial involvement have scholars that have lower absenteeism , less chance of dropping out, and better academic achievement.

In a time where parents seem to rush home from work, put dinner on the table and put kids to bed, Hudson Elementary has opened their doors to become a school that celebrates and encourages community involvement. Their Cougar Cafe offers family dinners and promotes academic and social growth for their students. Teachers volunteer and freely give their time to support their scholars with homework help ( during the year) and IRLA conferences ( throughout the summer).

Change cannot happen overnight and there will always be bumps on the road to success. One year of set back does not- cannot- warrant the closing of a school that has made huge gains in the years prior. Closing a school that champions for its community, that stands up for its students and builds a community for its scholars should not occur.

Please help us save Hudson Elementary School!
