

AdvoCats 2024. Run for council? It's easy.
Elections are in October and nominations will be open for a short period in mid-September. You usually have only 5 days. Book any date for online, or in-person, info sessions here: https://mavevents.cventevents.com/event/SFCInformationSessions/websitePage:af0390c0-912c-4c14-9edb-c7f42bb339cb Information will be available on the VEC website for 2024, but booklets are there now: https://www.vec.vic.gov.au/candidates-and-parties/becoming-a-local-council-candidate/local-council-candidate-resources It is a postal election so voter packs are mailed to voters. This includes your 300 word argument as to why you should be elected and a photo of your choice. The photo is a small passport sized black and white picture. It needs to be a recent picture and preferably prepared in b/w. Colour pictures will be converted by the VEC.
The formal process:
Nominate with a $250 deposit
Prepare 300 words and picture
Wait for the result.
What you should do:
Prepare a picture, portrait in black and white. Preferably 2024.
Write your best 300 words.
Optional: Prepare a leaflet- A4, z-fold, plain paper. Printing about $500.00.
Optional: Book in distribution of leaflet ($500-$2000) or organise volunteers.
Optional: Prepare corflute signs (design first) and have them printed. Cost depends on volume. 20 signs will cost about $400-800. Use the same picture throughout.
Optional: Get a free council permit for posting signs on standard council land locations.
Optional: Buy insurance for your signs – a council requirement- about $100.00
When nominations are almost open book an appointment with the Returning Officer.
Put your signs up.
Fill in your nomination form- take this, your words and your picture with you to the appointment.
Nominate.
Optional: Distribute leaflets when the VEC mails the voter packs so that they arrive close to the same time.
Organise volunteers to scrutinise the vote counting process for you.
