Petition to object to the inappropriate development of Canbury Business Park
The Issue
We the undersigned are objecting to the application for the following reasons:
The scale and design and its impact on the local community will overshadow the adjacent roads, namely, Canbury Park Road, Cowleaze Road and Elm Road.
We are very concerned about the future of the Educare Small School in Cowleaze Road as no provision has been made for its relocation. This school has been providing high quality education to local children in this area for over 20 years.
The school has already suffered from noise and air pollution caused by the current work being carried out on the old Gala Bingo Hall site. Kingston borough does not have the benefit of many sites that are appropriate for schools and school places remains a key issue for both the council and its residents.
The proposed development would be prominent in the protected view from Thatched Cottage to the Guildhall. This would have a detrimental and harmful impact on the listed building of The Guildhall and the historic townscape of the borough.
The impact on the prominent Listed Building (the Old Gala Bingo Hall site) which is sited directly next door to the proposed development and we believe that the special character of the listed building will be substantially harmed by this application.
In the borough’s recent Economical, Growth and Development Strategy (endorsed by Committee September 2017), it has been identified that there is a chronic lack of Grade A business space in the Borough. This area is an ideal spot for Grade A space being extremely well connected and in the centre of town is uniquely placed to provide much needed business space. The use of the site for further residential housing would prejudice the borough’s ability to meet its economic needs. Failure to meet the economic needs would result in Kingston becoming a commuter town. Kingston already has high levels of out-commuting, there is little provision for start-ups and grow-on space as referenced in the above strategy.
All the above, taken together would demonstrably and significantly outweigh any benefits this proposed application would bring.
Councillor Andrea Craig - Canbury Ward and Dr Janice Gravett on behalf of the Trustees of Educare School
