KCL: Enter negotiations of fossil fuel divestment and end student hunger strike

After weeks of civil disobedience at King’s College London, aimed at persuading the management to commit to a clear policy of total divestment from the fossil fuel industries, there are still no negotiations to resolve the dispute.

In response PhD student, Roger Hallam, has gone on hunger strike and currently entering his second week with no food. Over twenty other supporters are involved in fasts to highlight the issue. In the past few weeks students have been arrested, banned from Kings, and threatened with criminal damage charges in developments not seen at King’s for decades.

The reason for this campaign by King’s College Climate Emergency is that there is simply no more time to wait on dealing with climate changes. There is a scientific consensus that there can be no more investment in the oil and gas industries, if we are to stay below the 2 degrees average increase in global temperatures set at the international conference on climate change in Paris last year. Going over this limit will lead to catastrophe impacts on the world’s climate, involving the flooding of the coastal cities and the collapse of world food production due to increasing extreme weather events.

We are in the midst of an international emergency on climate change and all institutions have to act now. 96% of King’s students, in a recent survey, supported total divestment from fossil fuels by the College. Already universities such have SOAS and St. Andrews have paved the way and agreed to completely divest from fossil fuels. The civil disobedience and hunger strike have come about because we can wait no longer. Campaigners at Kings have been using conventional channels to get this change in policy for 4 years but King’s is still refusing to act. This is why we engage in these new non-violent methods.

Please sign this petition and spread the word about this ground breaking campaign. Universities are very sensitive to outside pressure - your action does count. Thank you.
