Every fall the King County Parks Department closes the Island Center Forest for a period of time in order to allow deer hunting. This event, held close to peoples’ homes and near town, promotes an outdated and ineffective practice of animal population control as well as an antisocial form of ‘recreation’ enjoyed by less than 5% of the U.S. population.
Residents of Vashon who are against this cruel practice deserve to have a voice too. Do we want to condone this annual slaughter? There are more humane ways to obtain meat.
Nature adjusts to system imbalances which create over-population, and hunting involves inflicting suffering on animals which is out of the purview of compassionate oversight. This petition was created in order to give a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. There are numerous places to hunt in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest – Vashon Island’s small protected areas should not be an option.
