Covid19 in state prisons.

Hello everyone!

Such a weird and kind of scary time, huh? I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy! Which brings me to my next point, Covid19 in prisons. A lot seems to be getting done at a federal level and not state. That’s because Federal prisons have the same guidelines and state regulations are up to that specific state. Most of the prisons are releasing nonviolent, elderly and end of sentence offenders. Which is a great step, especially for prison reform and overcrowding in prisons. However, with covid19 looking like it’s not going to stop anytime soon, I’m pressuring the Iowa legislatures to act now and be more proactive in releasing people in prisons.  My theory and suggestion is if they were to drop the mandatory minimum for 70% to 50% that would make more people eligible for parole, thus allowing more people to go to home confinement and reducing prison population due to Covid19. 
Inmates eligible for home confinement will also be judged on several criteria including nature of the crime convicted, conduct in prison, and security level of the inmate’s current facility, as recommended by District Attorney Barr. 

I believe this to be a good and solid solution to help reduce the prison population due to Covid19 because it would allow another set of people to go home but within reasons so not to just let anyone free. 

As this pandemic continues, I feel as if more drastic measures will need to be taken and this could be a fast and epic solution to help battle Covid19 in prisons, especially state prison where it is more up to the government to help than not. Please write in or call the Capitol and let them know you are concerned with people in prisons health during this pandemic and want them to take a more proactive approach into reducing prison population due to Covid19 by lowering mandatory minimums.
