There are currently over 100,000 people on the housing list, 1000s homeless on our streets 78,000 on rent allowance, 30,000 on RAS, 37,000 in mortgage arrears. We have 6,500 on the Housing waiting list in Kildare The Government have voted in a new legislation called the urban regeneration and housing bill that will allow developers to make vast profits out of leasing social housing to councils instead of transferring those houses into ownership of local authorities. If this happens there will be no council houses built only houses built by private developers to rent that will not be permanent homes only people to be subjected to private landlords The government is now relying on private rented accommodation instead of building houses for people. Long term leasing will establish rent allowance on a more permanent basis also taking people off the council housing list. We call on the government to use and adapt the NAMA properties to house the thousands currently not in secure and permanent accommodation. We call to Open up bordered houses, Provide for immediate suitable emergency accommodation, Increase Rent Supplement Introduce Rent Controls and Legislate to abolish bank veto on mortgage restructuring. If we don’t stand now the number of families out on the street and on waiting lists will rise dramatically this year.
