The breeder's ad reads: "SABLE CZECH LINE BREEDING RIGHTS GERMAN SHEPHERD PUPPIES! 5 females and 1 male are ready to find their forever home. Pups Come with first set of shots, CKC BREEDING registration papers. $1,200." This ad on Kijiji, like all their other dog ads, is listed under "Dogs & Puppies for Rehoming." There are many dogs and puppies for rehoming on Kijiji but also too many ads where dogs are sold for commercial purposes. Kijiji doesn't even make the difference anymore between dogs available for adoption and rehoming from dogs sold for profit, and lists every dog ads under the same category "Dogs & Puppies for Rehoming." A marketing technique or carelessness? Puppy mills and unethical breeders may continue to exist even if Kijiji Canada stops the commercial sale of animals on its site, but at least Kijiji would not give them the perfect platform to thrive on. As the top classifieds site in Canada, Kijiji should set an example and exclude breeders from selling animals on its website, sending the message that animals should not be sold as just another item via classified ads. Secondhand marketplaces such as Used.ca, OfferUp, BuySellTrade.ca, letgoCanada, Craigslist and Facebook do not allow profiting from the commercial sale of animals on their sites. Is it worth all the bad press when Kijiji could be instead spending it to bring together pets with families and shelters who want to give them loving homes?
