Great news guys! I reached out to secondhand marketplace OfferUp to see if they allowed profiting from the commercial sale of animals and they responded NO!
Here is what they responded:
"Hi Barbara, per our Prohibited Items Guidelines, pets and live animals are not permitted to be posted on OfferUp. You can read more about our Prohibited Items here:
https://ask.offerup.com/Getting-Started/Guidelines-To-Know/887968821/Prohibited-Items-Guidelines.htm
"Certain animal products are highly regulated, and the breeding and sale of live animals can result in risk of harm to animals. To protect the welfare of endangered, live, and companion animals and to comply with laws and regulations, the following are not allowed on OfferUp:
*Pets and other live animals
*Animal products derived from endangered or threatened species"
Puppy mills and unethical breeders may continue to exist even if Kijiji Canada stops the commercial sale of animals on its site, but at least Kijiji would not give them an easy platform to thrive on. There ARE secondhand marketplaces who care about animals such as OfferUp.com, Used.ca, BuySellTrade.ca, letgoCanada and Craigslist that do not allow profiting from the commercial sale of animals on their sites. As the leader of classifieds sites in Canada, Kijiji should set an example and exclude breeders from selling animals on its website, sending the message that animals should not be sold as just another item via classified ads.
Move over, Kijiji: We LOVE OfferUp! #AdoptDontShop #animals
