Kijiji says it has no plans to stop breeders from selling animals on its site despite a two-year-long campaign against the practice. “We just don’t think that the Internet is going anywhere, so we don’t see any point in shutting down that category and just making those people go somewhere else,” Kijiji Canada said to the Canadian Press. Kijiji should be doing the right thing, regardless of what other websites are doing. As the leader of classifieds sites in Canada, Kijiji should set an example and ban pet sales on its website, sending the message that animals should not be sold as just another item via classified ads. Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and the classified site BuySellTrade have all joined the ban. Kijiji says it has no plans to stop hosting animal sales ads, arguing that banning such posts would not be an effective way to stop animal mistreatment. Puppy mills and unethical breeders may continue to exist even if Kijiji Canada stops the sale of animals on its site, but at least they would not give them an easy platform to thrive on. As long as Kijiji knows that animals with health problems, often because of the conditions under which they are raised and bred are being sold on their site, and as long as they know that users are being cheated by unethical animal breeders on their site, Kijiji should not be selling animals. We need Kijiji Canada to help thousands of friendly and healthy pets waiting in shelters and in registered rescue groups across Canada to get adopted. We also need Kijiji to help individual families carefully rehome their pets for a small adoption fee to ensure their future well-being. But Kijiji says it has no plans to stop hosting animal sales ads. *Despite too many healthy and friendly animals waiting to be adopted. *Despite too many animals sold on their site with health problems, often because of the conditions under which they are raised and bred. *Despite too many people who bought their beloved pet on Kijiji only to discover, to their great distress, that it was sick, and then discover that the seller had disappeared. *Despite buyers risking a great deal of heartache, frustration, and expense when buying a pet from Kijiji. *Despite craigslist, Facebook Marketplace and the classified site BuySellTrade.ca all joining the ban. *Despite 6 public figures, 1 mayor and 31 animal welfare organizations supporting this campaign. *Despite 6 companies pulling their ads from Kijiji’s pet sales pages, and *Despite more than 104,000 individuals signing this petition.
