Public figures and animal welfare organizations supporting this campaign: Tara Oram Simms, musician Liliana Danel, animal advocacy campaigner Darcy Wintonyk, TV producer and columnist Nat Lauzon, radio host Mark Spicoluk, musician “There should be no sales on-line or in pet stores of puppies brought into this world to add to the over-crowding, until every dog already here has his forever home. Please support this campaign to foster the promotion of "re-homing" of pets in need. Eliminate suffering and cruelty and loneliness once and for all. We will all be the better for it!” — Me Anne-France Goldwater, lawyer (Goldwater, Dubé) Animal Alliance of Canada Humane Society International – HSI Canada BCSPCA Katie’s Place Friendly Giants Dog Rescue SPCA Monteregie Zoocheck Canada “Websites that permit online sales of animals provide a tool for puppy mills, unethical breeders and exotic animal brokers to operate without any regulation, traceability or oversight. Montreal's SPCA asks that Kijiji follow the lead of other websites such as Craigslist, and make an ethical and responsible decision to prohibit the sale of animals on their website.” — Alanna Devine, Director of Animal Advocacy, Montreal SPCA Saguenay SPCA Vancouver Humane Society Refuge de Galahad Golden Rescue Companion Animal Adoption Centres of Quebec (caacQ) Paws for Hope Animal Foundation Refuge pour chats de Verdun "The East Bay SPCA is proud to have led the ban of commercial sales of animals on Craigslist, and whole-heartedly supports a similar ban on Kijiji Canada” - Allison Lindquist, president and CEO, East Bay SPCA Critteraid - Summerland Cat Sanctuary Society Victoria Humane Society Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association Small Animal Rescue Society of BC Spirit's Mission Rescue Society Turtle Gardens Animal Rescue “The Winnipeg Humane Society believes Kijiji should prohibit the sale of household pets. Kijiji is an online marketplace that lacks the rules and boundaries put in place by responsible pet shelters and rescues to ensure safe, long-term adoptions. There are no such rules that govern what and how Kijiji sells goods – and, unfortunately, animals are relegated to “goods” under their terms. Under Kijiji’s guidelines, “anything goes” when it comes to the sale of animals. Anyone can sell an animal on Kijiji. Kijiji’s administrators do nothing to encourage or enforce responsible pet ownership, and do not screen the sale of animals to ensure they are not from negligent backyard breeders.” — Aileen White, Director, Communications & Public Affairs, Winnipeg Humane Society Dogwood Rescue Society Vancouver Shar Pei Rescue Animal Adoption Montreal and Chatopia SAINTS Rescue Big Heart Rescue Society Stop Online Puppy Mills The Puppy Mill Project “Online classified sites are becoming the main tool used by puppy mills to market and sell their puppies. Using stock photos of home-raised and well-loved dogs, puppy mills can present a false image of a loving, caring breeder in an online classifieds. In reality, the dogs are suffering in filthy, deprived cages in barns or basements with little human contact. Kijiji has an opportunity to show true leadership in the online community by choosing to only promote the adoption of dogs (and cats) in Canada and not provide a platform for puppy mills.” — Barbara Cartwright, CEO, Canadian Federation of Humane Societies Live signature totals from petition: www.change.org/kijiji 1 petition. 6 public figures. 31 organizations. 103k signatures.
