Award boy band One Direction the keys to San Diego

Dear Mayor Faulconer,

Being a father, you probably know about a boy band by the name of One Direction. One Direction are a male vocal group consisting of five members - Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Liam Payne. One Direction rose to fame after coming in third place on the UK version of a televised talent competition called "The X-Factor" in 2010. Word spread about this musical group very quickly all throughout Europe in 2011, and eventually the United States. One Direction became the first UK act to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 music chart with their first album, something that not even The Beatles acomplished.

Their first US tour, the Up All Night Tour, visited Viejas Arena right here in San Diego on June 8, 2012. The band performed many of their hits from their first album to the sold out crowd. To feed to the demand of fans who wished to attend, but were unable to due to the tickets selling out, One Direction was booked to play at the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Chula Vista on August 4, 2013, following the release of their second album "Take Me Home", which also debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The concert was once again a sell out, drawing fans from not just San Diego county, but surrounding regions... even Tijuana to the open air venue for a night full of fun. Fans were left wanting even more.

Unfortunately, their 2014 tour did not grant San Diego a date. The band performed three nights in a row at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA. However, they will be returning for their fourth North American tour, "On The Road Again", on July 9 at Qualcomm Stadium. As of right now, and To my knowledge, it has been a very long time since there was a concert held inside the stadium. Based off of current ticket sale rates, the show will be a sell out. Over 60,000 fans will be flocking to the stadium for this historic event. As of right now, San Diego and Santa Clara are the only Californian cities who will be hosting the boy band on their 2015 tour. Therefore, there will be hundreds, if not thousands of fans traveling to San Diego for the show. The fans are likely to book hotels, dine, and shop in San Diego. This event will certainly help the local economy, and lighten the spirits surrounding the debate on the fate of this San Diego landmark.

One Direction have had a very celebratory year in 2014. Their fourth release, "FOUR" debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Billboard has also named the group the "Top Artist of the Year". The band was named the "Artist of the Year" at the 2014 American Music Awards, Best UK & Ireland Act at the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards, and have won countless of other awards globally. 2015 is expected to be even bigger for these boys.

We feel that awarding the band with the keys to San Diego prior to their July 9th performance at Qualcomm Stadium would be a very warm and welcoming gesture. Those who sign this petition agree that this gesture is appropriate, and the band shall receive the keys to the city.

Sincerely,

Chelsey Harrison, Eilani Garayzar, Sophia Collins, Tyler Schornak, and Brittany Castro
