We are truly grateful to all the donors that helped us achieve our fundraising target of RM100,000 on Simply Giving. It has made a significant impact on our ability to campaign for gender equality in Malaysia’s citizenship laws. Out of the amount collected, 60% was spent on legal disbursements, 30% on public outreach and 10% on administrative-related costs.
We are increasing our target for our final legal fight at the Federal Court by RM100,000 to cover additional legal disbursement costs and advocacy-related costs.
Unfortunately, the Court of Appeal overturned the KL High Court decision on 5 August 2022 when they ruled in favour of the Malaysian Government and decided that Malaysian women should not be granted equal citizenship rights as Malaysian men in the conferment of citizenship on their overseas-born children. Many mothers hoped that the Court of Appeal would side with Malaysian women, but this setback means that the fight for their overseas-born children’s safety and well-being goes on.
We have since filed an application for leave to appeal to the Federal Court and the case management is in process. This calls for greater amplification of the Malaysian campaign for equal citizenship to ensure that there is greater awareness of the lived experiences of those impacted by the discriminatory law and greater pressure on decision-makers to ensure justice is served to all Malaysian women who are treated as second-class citizens in their citizenship rights. This is also considering more and more policymakers are publicly committing to vote in favour of a constitutional amendment.
Your generosity has contributed to widespread awareness and support for Malaysian women’s equal citizenship rights, nationally and globally. Malaysian women’s equal citizenship right was finally recognised by the Kuala Lumpur High Court and gave mothers the hope that the dream of their children’s citizenship may finally be realised; the Government has also made its commitment to amend the Federal Constitution to grant women the right to confer automatic citizenship on their overseas-born children.
You play a crucial role in our campaign. We hope you can continue to support our efforts and spread the word! Your contribution brings us one step closer to our goal each day and ends the struggles of Malaysian women and their overseas-born children. We would like to once again thank you for your continuous support and efforts in amplifying the Malaysian Campaign for Equal Citizenship and for standing in solidarity with us.
Sincerely,
Family Frontiers team
