IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION

I would like to clarify that this online petition was initiated by me, Antonio Quesnel, as a concerned citizen of Alexandria. It was not initiated, sponsored, or organized by any candidate running for Mayor or Deputy Mayor of North Glengarry.

I am not running for any position with the Township. With the municipal election underway, I want to ensure that this petition remains separate from the election and does not influence anyone's choice of candidate.

This petition is simply about our community's concerns regarding the future of long-term care in Alexandria.

Thank you to everyone who has signed and continues to support this important issue.

Presently, the Ministry of Long-Term Care (MLTC) is considering a proposal from Yorkville Development LP, in partnership with Southbridge Care Homes, to construct a new long-term care home at 800 Nick Kaneb Drive in Cornwall. This development, if approved, will lead to the closure of our cherished Palace LTC in Alexandria.

Such a decision will have profound ramifications on our community. Residents and their families will endure long travel times and emotional stress, having to relocate their loved ones outside our familiar environment. Imagine driving miles away, across hazardous winter roads, just to visit your aging parents or grandparents. Many families with tight schedules might see their bonds strained due to the distance. The sense of community that Alexandria provides will be shattered.

Moreover, shutting down the Palace LTC will also have economic implications. Many dedicated staff members who have been employed there for years will face unemployment, disrupting livelihoods in our neighborhood. The closure also strips Alexandria of one of its key facilities that serves its aging populace, diminishing the quality of life for many senior citizens.

We understand the importance of expanding and improving long-term care facilities in Ontario, including Cornwall. However, this should not come at the cost of closing a much-needed home in Alexandria.

We implore the Ministry of Long-Term Care  reconsider the impact of their decision on our beloved community in Alexandria. Let’s evaluate all possible alternatives that preserve our local care homes while addressing regional needs.

We urge everyone who values connection and care for their loved ones to join us in this cause. The stakes are high, and our community’s voice matters. Sign this petition to keep the Palace Long-Term Care Home open in Alexandria and safeguard the fabric of our community.
