Keep the LIFE Programme Alive: A Call to the European Commission
El problema
To: The European Commission, Members of the European Parliament, and relevant decision-makers
Why This Petition?
Since 1992, the LIFE Programme has been one of the European Union's most distinctive funding instruments, dedicated to environmental protection, climate action, biodiversity conservation, and circular economy initiatives.
Over the past three decades, LIFE has supported thousands of projects that have:
- Protected endangered species and ecosystems.
- Demonstrated real-world solutions for climate mitigation and adaptation.
- Promoted sustainable practices across industries and public administrations.
- Helped Europe transition towards a greener, more resilient economy.
According to recent reports, the next Multiannual Financial Framework of the European Commission does not include a specific budget line for the LIFE Programme. If confirmed, this would represent the end of a long-standing and internationally recognized funding scheme.
Why Is This Important?
We understand that programmes evolve, priorities shift, and funding instruments adapt over time. Introducing new programmes is often necessary to address emerging needs.
However, in the case of the LIFE Programme, we believe its disappearance would entail significant risks:
- Loss of efficiency: LIFE is well-established. Replacing it with new schemes will create administrative complexity and require years of adaptation from public and private stakeholders.
- Loss of continuity: Long-term environmental and climate action demands consistent, stable frameworks. LIFE provides that.
- Loss of knowledge and trust: LIFE is internationally known as a reliable mechanism for testing and scaling sustainable solutions in Europe.
Our Request
We respectfully ask the European Commission and relevant EU institutions to:
- Reconsider the decision to remove the LIFE Programme from the next EU budget.
- Ensure that environmental and climate action funding retains the specific characteristics that have made LIFE successful: demonstration projects, real-world impact, and long-term conservation efforts.
- Engage in an open dialogue with the LIFE community, including NGOs, researchers, companies, consultants, and public authorities, before making irreversible decisions.

We invite you to:

- Translate and disseminate it in your language and community.
- Connect with similar initiatives, so we can coordinate efforts and avoid fragmentation.
This is not about defending a specific funding tool for its own sake.
It is about preserving a proven, efficient, and impactful mechanism to protect Europe’s environment and climate for the generations to come.
Help us keep LIFE alive.
