Some statements from Mr. McCully's letter to me:
"New Zealand's support and co-sponsorship of Resolution 2334 is consistent with our approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over many decades and the statements New Zealand made regularly on this issue during our two year term on the Security Council.
"Resolution 2334 reaffirms the importance of the two state solution. It condemns the obstacles to a negotiated two state solution: inflammatory rhetoric and incitement, and violence against civilians, including acts of terror, and Israeli settlement activity that contravenes international law. The call for a halt to illegal settlement activity is a clear and deliberate response to international concern that the rate of settlement activity will render the two state solution a purely academic concept. Without a two state solution, demographic and security considerations will pose a serious challenge to the future character of Israel.
"The Resolution followed repeated calls from the UN Secretary-General and his Special Coordinator on the Middle East Peace Process, as well as the Principals of the Middle East Quartet in their report dated 1 July 2016, for the Security Council to act in order to preserve the two state solution.
"No member of the Security Council voted against Resolution 2334. The ten elected members of the Security Council (Angola, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, NZ, Senegal, Spain Ukraine, Uruguay, and Venezuela) all voted in favour of the Resolution. Of the five permanent members of the Council, France, the UK, China, and Russia, all voted in favour, while the US deliberately abstained from voting, allowing the Resolution 2334 to pass."
It's obvious that the current crop of international leaders have spent little time reviewing historical facts.
And what if Israel stopped settling in their historic homeland of Judea and Samaria? Does anyone really believe that the Palestinian Authority will have an immediate change of heart, cease all terrorist activities, come running to the negotiating table and recognise Israel's right to exist?
Late last year four Arabs accepted an invitation for a holiday of Sukkot in the nearby Israeli settlement of Efrat. The Palestinian Authority arrested them.
The Palestinian Authority does not want peace. They want rather to ethnically cleanse Judea and Samaria of all Jews, they want Jerusalem as their capital. While Israel reaches out for peace, the Palestinian Authority rewards and applauds any Palestinian who murders a Jew. And of course the UN rewards the Palestinian Authority with resolution after resolution, while penalizing Israel.
It is beyond comprehension that English and McCully choose not to recognise the anti-Israel bias in the UN.
Of all the UN's "condemnations" during 2016 - 2017, TWENTY resolutions are against Israel, one against Iran, one against Russia, one is against North Korea, and one against Syria - a regime that is killing its own people by the hundreds of thousands. Not a single UN General Assembly resolution condemns the human rights abuses in Saudi Arabia, Burundi, Turkey, Venezuela, China, or Cuba.
Former US Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick nailed it when she said: "The long march through the UN has produced many benefits for the PLO. It has created a people where there was none; an issue where there was none; a claim where there was none. Now the PLO is seeking to create a state where there already is one." — Jeane Kirkpatrick, U.S. ambassador to the UN (1981-85).
