I apologize for one more email, but I wanted to share a final update—the public comment period for the former Meridian Police Station closes today, April 16 at 3:30 PM CST. The board of trustees will meet on Friday at 10 am to make a decision. We need about 150 letters to have an impact!

Dear Members of the MDAH Board,

I am writing to oppose the proposed demolition of the former Meridian Police Station.

This building is a Mississippi Landmark and an important part of Meridian’s built environment. The building, designed by Chris Risher, is part of the city’s architectural history and contributes to the character of its downtown. Once it is removed, that part of Meridian’s historic fabric cannot be replaced.

It is also my understanding that many residents are not aware that this issue is currently under review. Public input is most valuable when people have a clear understanding of what is being considered, and it is not evident that this has been the case.

Demolition should not be assumed to be the only path forward. The existing structure could be repurposed for new uses, including housing or other functions that serve students and the broader community. Reuse of historic buildings is a practical approach that allows communities to meet present needs while retaining important aspects of their character.

I am also concerned about the potential impact of new construction at this location. A significantly taller building would change the scale of the surrounding area and could disrupt the established relationship between existing civic buildings and public spaces in downtown Meridian.

The Mississippi Landmark designation exists to provide an added level of review and protection for places of importance. Decisions to remove that protection should be made with great care, as they affect not only a single property but also the broader integrity of preservation efforts across the state.

For these reasons, I strongly urge the Board to deny approval for demolition and to ensure that meaningful alternatives are fully considered.
