Administrators and student activists at UCLA are attacking core First Amendment rights in a bid to punish expression that offends them — and with it, eradicating your ability to express yourself freely. Today’s conversations about “free speech” overwhelmingly focus on topics including so-called “hate speech,” “trigger warnings,” “microaggressions,” “safe spaces,” and “echo chambers.” But something is missing: demagoguery trumps dialogue when it comes to free speech at UCLA. Discussions all-but-ignore the underlying premise of free speech: the law, and more specifically, the First Amendment.
