Petition updateOpen Letter to UCLA Administrators: Keep Professor Fink at UCLA!Anger and Unrest Stirs at UCLA Over the Likely Discharge of Professor Fink

Keep Professor Fink at UCLAPacific Palisades, CA, United States
May 29, 2017
Anger and unrest is stirring at UCLA over the likely discharge of an extremely influential, popular, and effective professor.
Word has spread across campus and throughout various news outlets that the school is attempting to release Fink from his teaching duties on campus. Students are in uproar over this and organized to collectively voice their anger with the administrator over its unfair treatment of Professor Fink. On Friday afternoon, students held a protest at UCLA in support of Professor Fink and delivered a list of demands to Laura Gómez, the administrator with whom the decision to keep or release Professor Fink currently rests.*
The school dispatched a heavy police presence to the site of the protest, which deterred dozens (if not hundreds) of students from attending. It's heartening that many students attended this demonstration despite the widespread presence of UCPD and Student Affairs officers. It shows that many UCLA students will not let the presence of police undermine their commitment to their belief that academic freedom, free speech, due process rights, and an unimpeded free-flowing marketplace of ideas are fundamental necessities to the functioning of a flagship public university such as UCLA.
* Dean Laura Gómez is someone Professor Fink identified as biased at the outset of the excellence review process, which gravely calls in to question her ability to make a neutral decision about Professor Fink's fate at UCLA.
