UCLA students will be delivering the following set of demands to administrators at their Keep Fink! protest on May 26. Link here: https://goo.gl/LvC3DN The List of Demands reads as follows: We the students of UCLA, on behalf of our peers, alumni, and predecessors, hereby demand that the University implement the following actions to fulfill its responsibility as a public institution to serve the citizens of California, the local community, and the world at-large: 1) Cease the Communication Studies Department’s mistreatment of Professor Fink and ensure that he is permitted to keep teaching and positively influencing the lives of students at UCLA; 2) Refrain from interfering with faculty members’ issuance of PTEs to students; 3 Restore the fundamental concepts of basic fairness and due process rights to all university dealings; 4) Implement mandatory “intellectual diversity” training for all faculty members at UCLA; 5) Implement educational pedagogies and curriculums that increase intellectual tolerance within the campus community; 6) Require the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to expand it’s definition of “incidents of bias” to encompass all forms of bias —including bias based on political or ideological disagreement — not just those that are based on race, sex, or disability status; 7) Require Communication Studies Department Chair Kerri Johnson to immediately resign, or alternatively, issue a public apology for repeatedly lying to Professor Fink about matters pertaining to his class size and Excellence Review; 8) Institute a formal administrative review process to sanction Department Chairs, Deans, and Vice Chancellors who act in dereliction of the same True Bruin values (e.g., Integrity) that they repeatedly promulgate to students; 9) Renegotiate the Unit 18 MOA to include strengthened protections for lecturers - especially those undergoing Excellence Review; 10) Maintain a written record of “current practices” pertaining to personnel matters, rather than inventing them on-the-fly without minimal-to-no notice to faculty, staff, and students.
