Keep Matawan Water Public — No Sale or Long‑Term Lease

The Issue

What’s happening?

The Borough is considering a sale or long-term lease of Matawan’s water and sanitary utility systems to a private (or public) entity under the Water Infrastructure Protection Act (WIPA).
This decision could permanently hand control of our drinking water and wastewater services to an outside company.

Why we’re concerned:

• Costs: Water bills in Matawan have already risen about 40% in the last year. History from other NJ towns shows privatization often leads to even higher rates.
• Control: Selling or leasing means less direct local oversight and reduced accountability to residents.
• Contracts: WIPA deals can lock towns into decades-long commitments that are hard or impossible to reverse.
