Dear Lake Hodges Recreational Users,
As you may know, Lake Hodges has been closed for some time now, and it has been particularly frustrating for those of us who enjoy spending time windsurfing, winging, SUPing, and kayaking on the lake. We want to urge you to take action and join our efforts to reopen the lake.
We believe that the voice of the recreational users of Lake Hodges is particularly important in this matter. The city council needs to hear from us about how crucial this lake is for our sports and how much we miss it. We need to let them know that the closure has not only affected our ability to enjoy our favorite activities but also the local economy and tourism in the area.
Therefore, we are calling on all windsurfers, wingers, SUPers, kayakers, and all recreational users of Lake Hodges to take action and contact the city council. Let them know how important this lake is to you and your community. Urge them to prioritize the reopening of the lake so that we can get back to enjoying the activities we love.
Your support is critical in this matter, and we hope that you will join us in our efforts to reopen Lake Hodges. Thank you for your time and consideration.

The closure of Lake Hodges to recreational activities for over a year now has had significant and negative impacts on the local community and economy. Displacement of recreational resources has forced many residents to drive over 60 miles to access the same recreational alternatives, causing a considerable inconvenience and additional costs for many. Additionally, 12 businesses have been directly affected, including boating and kayaking services, fish guiding services, and photographic services, among others.
Moreover, there are other adverse effects to consider. Firstly, there has been no environmental or economic study to assess the impact of the repair project on the protected resident and migratory birds, fish spawning, or the wells of nearby communities. Secondly, the city's decision to close the lake entirely for recreation was unnecessary, as historical practices during low water events involved allowing car top boaters, kayaks, SUPs, windsurfers, and other paddle sports to launch in designated safe zones. Thirdly, low water levels have caused the pump station to experience clean energy losses, and millions of gallons of water are currently being released downstream.
While the reopening of the lake for recreational activities alone will not mitigate all of these issues, it is a crucial step in the right direction. It will provide an opportunity for local residents and visitors to enjoy recreational activities and support the local economy. Moreover, it will encourage the City to re-evaluate the environmental and economic impacts of the repair project and consider alternative solutions that may lessen the effects on the community and environment.
Therefore, we urge the City to reconsider its decision and reopen Lake Hodges for recreational activities as soon as possible, while continuing to monitor the environmental and economic impacts of the repair project and taking appropriate measures to mitigate any negative effects.
