The ICE detention center in Surprise and the midterms

Hi everyone!

With the midterm elections just a few days away, I wanted to share my support for two candidates who have stood up for our community during the fight against the ICE detention center in Surprise.

Kris Mayes – Arizona Attorney General

I’m grateful for everything Attorney General Kris Mayes has done for our community, and I'm proud to support her! When I started speaking out against the ICE detention center being so close to Dysart High School and Dysart Middle School, I learned pretty quickly which elected officials were willing to stand up for students and which ones weren't.

In April, I was beyond honored when she invited me to speak at her press conference where she announced her lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security. Unlike Rep. Paul Gosar, Surprise Mayor Kevin Sartor, and the rest of the Surprise City Council, Kris Mayes stood up for the students and families when we needed her the most. She's the ONLY reason why the ICE detention center isn't open right now. BUT, the fight isn’t over yet, which is why we need her to win on Tuesday.

William Coniam – Dysart Governing Board

I'm also supporting William Coniam for the Dysart Governing Board. I sat down with William a few weeks ago and had a really good conversation with him. He has publicly spoken out against the ICE detention center and raised concerns about its impact on Dysart students, school safety, and district finances. He's also made transparency and accountability central issues in his campaign.

As a recent Dysart High School graduate, I spent most of my senior year of high school and freshman year of college trying to get the school district and governing board to take students’ safety concerns about the ICE detention center seriously, develop safety plans to address the potential risks, and speak out against the facility. Instead, I’ve been met with total silence. Getting straight answers from the district and its governing board has been incredibly frustrating. Students and their families shouldn't have to fight this hard about their own safety. William understands that, and I'd love to see someone on the governing board who will put students first.

The ICE detention center is currently on hold, but we want it permanently closed. The decisions our elected leaders make have real consequences for students and families. That's why I'm asking you to please vote for Kris Mayes for Attorney General and William Coniam for Dysart Governing Board. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Cali Overs
