UPDATE: the AZ Dept of Education confirmed they're opening an investigation
Hi everyone! I have good news to share. The Arizona Department of Education confirmed they're opening an investigation into the complaint four other former Dysart High School student council officers and I filed last month.
Arizona law requires three lockdown drills every year. Last school year, we went 270 days without a single one. I emailed Mayor Kevin Sartor and the Surprise City Council regarding this. Two days later, Dysart High School finally held its first and only lockdown drill of the year.
If Dysart Schools is already struggling to meet basic emergency preparedness standards then opening an ICE detention center less than a mile away from several schools makes the situation even more dangerous.
Rinchem, a chemical storage facility, is also less than a mile away from the campus. Dysart High School has never conducted a HAZMAT drill. Students and staff have absolutely no idea how to respond to a chemical leak at Rinchem.
Mayor Sartor isn't just the mayor of Surprise. He is also the safety coordinator for Dysart Schools. As mayor, he refuses to push back against the ICE detention center and didn't tell anyone that a chemical company sits right next to it. As safety coordinator, he didn't meet basic state safety requirements and didn't prepare students for a potential HAZMAT emergency. Students deserve better than this.
