Hi Everyone,
Tonight is a really big deal. The students of Dysart High School and surrounding schools near the proposed ICE detention center need you to show up tonight.
The Surprise City Council meets tonight at 6pm at Surprise City Hall. It's the first meeting since the council members returned from their trip to Washington, D.C., where they sat down with DHS representatives to discuss the proposed ICE detention center right down the street from our school.
Tonight, Mayor Sartor will be reporting back on what was discussed. We'll find out whether he and the other council members stood up for the safety of Dysart High School students and the other surrounding schools.
I will be asking Mayor Sartor and the other city council members to publicly support my 3-mile student safety buffer zone proposal. I will also be asking the Mayor, who is the Safety Coordinator for Dysart School District, why he’s ignored all three of my meeting requests with him, even after he personally told me to email him.
Your presence at the city council meeting tonight will send a clear message: We are ready to fight for the safety of the students at Dysart High School, Dysart Middle School, El Mirage Elementary School, and every student across the United States.
There are two ways that you can show up tonight:
OPTION 1: Peacefully protest outside
Join me and other Dysart High School Student Council members outside Surprise City Hall before and during the meeting. No sign up is needed, just show up.
OPTION 2: Sign up to speak inside
The ICE facility is no longer part of the general public comment period and is now a formal agenda item. This means if you wait to speak at the Call to the Public at the end of the meeting, the Mayor will be required to cut you off if you start talking about the ICE detention center. You need to speak during Agenda Item 20 so your voice can be heard.
To speak inside:
1) Fill out the Surprise City Council Meeting Public Comment Form: Click here for the form.
2) Choose "Agenda Item" and request to speak during Agenda Item 20: Federal Advocacy Trip Debrief.
3) Submit your form by no later than 5pm TODAY.
